History of Rhinoplasty: Evolution of Rhinoplasty and Surgery

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct and reconstruct the shape of the nose. This procedure can be performed for aesthetic as well as functional reasons. It is aimed to make changes in the appearance or functioning of the nose due to aesthetic concerns or congenital problems. However, when we look at the history of rhinoplasty, we see that this surgical intervention dates back to a much longer history.

First Symptoms: Rhinoplasty in Antiquity

The history of rhinoplasty goes back several thousand years. The earliest records of nasal surgery began to be seen in ancient civilisations. One of the most important sources on this subject is the Edwin Smith Papyrus from 1650 BC. This document is one of the oldest written sources describing various nasal traumas and treatment methods. Interestingly, this papyrus is believed to have been copied from an even older manuscript written by Imhotep, a respected Egyptian physician.

Ancient India and the Sushruta Samhita

Around 500 BC, an important step in rhinoplasty was taken in ancient India. Sushruta, considered as the father of medical science, described highly advanced techniques for nasal reconstruction in his work Sushruta Samhita. Successful results were obtained in nasal repair using skin grafts from the forehead and cheek. This technique is called Indian forehead flap even today.
