Ethnic Rhinoplasty

What Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty? Natural and Facially Harmonious Solutions

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a cosmetic nose surgery performed to refine the nasal structure of individuals from different ethnic backgrounds while preserving their characteristic features. Unlike traditional rhinoplasty, the goal is not to completely change the nose, but to achieve a natural appearance that harmonizes with the patient’s facial features, cultural identity, and ethnic characteristics.

Why Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty Performed?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is generally preferred to address issues such as:

  • Wide nostrils

  • Low or flat nasal bridge

  • Wide or bulbous nasal tip

  • Imbalance in the nose-lip angle

  • Breathing difficulties

The most important point is preserving the natural features that reflect the person’s ethnic identity.

Who Is a Candidate for Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

  • Those who feel their nose is disproportionate to their face

  • Individuals dissatisfied with their nasal appearance but seeking a natural look

  • People experiencing breathing problems

  • Patients who have undergone previous nose surgery but are unhappy with the results

How Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty Performed?

The surgical process is similar to traditional rhinoplasty, but the surgeon’s approach differs:

  • The nasal tip may be refined and reduced.

  • The nasal bridge may be raised or narrowed.

  • Nostrils may be narrowed.

  • If necessary, functional surgery may also be performed to correct breathing problems.

The surgeon’s focus is on achieving a result that fits the overall facial aesthetics without altering the person’s ethnic features.

Recovery Process

  • Swelling and bruising are normal during the first week.

  • Most patients can return to daily life within 7–10 days.

  • The final shape of the nose usually takes 6–12 months.

  • Functional issues, such as breathing, often improve significantly after surgery.

Cost of Ethnic Rhinoplasty

The cost of ethnic rhinoplasty varies depending on the surgeon’s experience, the scope of the surgery, and hospital conditions. Since it requires more individualized planning compared to standard rhinoplasty, pricing may differ.

Conclusion

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a specialized form of rhinoplasty that enhances nasal aesthetics while preserving the patient’s identity and natural features. When performed by experienced surgeons, it can provide both aesthetically pleasing and functionally satisfying results.

FAQ about Rhinoplasty

When is from the ear or ribs used in nose surgery?

In rhinoplasty, the preferred approach is always to utilize the patient's own nasal cartilage and bone tissues. This ensures a natural appearance and functional nose. However, in certain cases, the patient's own tissues may be insufficient. This can occur in the following situations:

Previous unsuccessful rhinoplasty: Prior surgeries may have excessively consumed or damaged cartilage and bone tissue.
Severe nasal trauma: Trauma can lead to deformation of cartilage and bone tissue.
Congenital nasal anomalies: Structural deficiencies in the nose may necessitate additional cartilage support. In such cases, cartilage harvesting from the ear or ribs may be necessary.

When performed using proper technique and by an experienced surgeon:

It does not cause any noticeable deformity or functional loss to the ear or rib area.
The harvested cartilage provides a natural appearance and functionality for nasal shaping.

Ear cartilage:

Typically used for shaping the tip of the nose. Its thin and pliable nature contributes to a natural aesthetic.

Rib cartilage:

Preferred for areas like the nasal dorsum and septum due to its stronger structure.

Your doctor will thoroughly examine your nasal structure and determine the most suitable cartilage source and usage method for you. Consulting an expert surgeon is crucial for achieving flawless results without compromising natural beauty in your rhinoplasty procedure.

What should be done before rhinoplasty surgery?

Before the rhinoplasty operation, it is important to give information about all the medications you are taking and your habits such as smoking or alcohol during the preliminary interview with your doctor.

Just like other surgeries requiring general anesthesia, various tests are performed before rhinoplasty surgery and the anesthesiologist's evaluation is obtained. If the anesthesiologist gives an opinion that the operation will not pose any obstacle, the operation is given the green light. Before the operation, you are usually advised not to eat or drink water for 6-7 hours. In addition, if you are taking medications that can increase the risk of bleeding and dilute the blood (such as aspirin, coumadin), it is recommended to stop using them or switch to alternative medications.

How long do you need to stay in the hospital after rhinoplasty surgery?

Since I use Piezo (Ultrasonic) technology while performing my surgeries, the amount of bleeding decreases and the healing process accelerates. In this way, patients I operate in the morning can be discharged in the evening of the same day or at the latest in the morning of the next day.

When is the plaster removed after surgery, when are the sutures and tampons removed?

Following aesthetic nose surgery, the nasal packs are removed within 1 to 3 days, and the nasal splint is typically taken off on the 5th or 6th day. There's no need to remove the stitches inside the nose since I use self-dissolving sutures. In cases where an open technique is utilized, the cosmetic stitches at the nose tip are removed around the 5th to 6th day. Patients who come from outside the city or from abroad can comfortably return home after the 5th day.

Does removing a nasal tampon cause pain? Which nasal tampons do you use?

I avoid using traditional cloth and large tampons for nose surgeries due to the potential for significant pain and bleeding during removal. Instead, I opt for special silicone tampons with a central hole, which facilitate comfortable breathing. The removal of silicone tampons is nearly painless and minimizes bleeding.

How long after rhinoplasty surgery can I return to work?

It is not a condition that requires continuous hospitalization after aesthetic nose surgery. If you are working in a job that does not require intense physical effort, there is no harm in starting to work on the 3rd day after the operation. However, if you are in the construction industry or in professions that may cause nasal trauma such as football players and basketball players, it may be more appropriate not to work for at least 6 weeks.

Rhinoplasty surgery can be combined with which other surgeries?

Rhinoplasty surgery should address issues that impede breathing, such as enlarged nasal turbinates (concha hypertrophy), deviated nasal septum (deviation), polyps, chronic sinusitis, etc., in the same session. In addition to these, procedures like Botox, fillers, eyelid surgery, facelift surgery, and lip enhancements can also be performed alongside rhinoplasty.
